Receives harsh criticism from Republicans and Democrats
In an extremely rare event, the Republican Party leader, Michael Steele, has publicly stated the obvious when he criticized President Obama's Afgahanistan policy saying, "the one thing you don't do, is engage in a land war in Afghanistan".
It's not known whether Steele's words were just a misguided attempt to jab at Obama or a trial balloon to test the antiwar message ahead of the November elections. Regardless, leaders of both ruling parties unloaded on Steele. Calls for his resignation arose from Republican ranks, while the leadership of the other war party, the DNC, characterized Steele as "rooting for failure".
What Steele's critics may be missing is the possibility that his real intention is to find out how deep anti-war sentiment has seeped into the Republican base. Polls show support for the long war in Afghanistan slipping across the board.
Wouldn't that be something, the Republicans as the anti-war party?
