Where's the Compromise?
Despite being called a 'compromise' by the main stream media, the Debt Deal passed today is really a deception worthy of Bernie Madoff. It will reduce the deficit on the backs of the very people who voted Obama and Democrats into office in 2008 while raising not one dime of new revenue. It expressly forbids closing tax loop holes!
Plus it targets Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid for cuts, and the whole deal is likely to plunge the nation's economy into a deeper funk, increasing unemployment. Where's the compromise in this deal?
Yet only two Illinois' Democrats opposed this stinker, Reps Jan Schakowsky (IL-9) and Jesse Jackson Jr. (IL-2). Thank you Jan and Jesse. (See the final vote tally here)
But what's with Danny Davis (IL-7), Bobby Rush (IL-1), Luis Guiterrez (IL-4) Mike Quigley (IL-5) and Jerry Costello (IL-12)? They all voted for this 'compromise' that actually punishes their own constituents and rewards Republican fat cats. Is that what compromise means?
Economist Mike Whitney says the debt deal strips Congress of its Constitutional authority to control the nation's purse-strings. That authority will be handed over to a bi-partisan committee that will decide how to slash $1.5 trillion from the budget in order to reduce the deficits. And you know Obama loves to pack them bi-partisan committees with right-wing Republicans and conservative Democrats. Don't look to them for any progressive ideas.
Nevertheless, the majority of Illinois Democrats supported the deal. Do they think Illinois voters will reward them in next year's election? Maybe like they did in 2010? We'll see.
