If the public was expecting a brouhaha at the DuPage Health Care Forum on September 15, they didn't get it. What they got was much-needed straight talk about the facts and issues our country faces on health care reform.

DuPage County Board Members Dirk Enger, Rita Gonzalez and Anthony Michelassi sponsored the event, held at the auditorium in the DuPage County Complex in Wheaton. The invited speakers were well-informed and articulate experts, wholly unlike the spin doctors ubiquitous these days on electronic media. About 200 members of the public attended.

Two of the invited speakers, Stephen Challinor and James R. Rhodes, came to share their unique insight and personal experience with our dysfunctional health care system.

Australian-born Challinor, now a US citizen and CPA in Carol Stream, described the Government-run health care system in his home country - where every citizen has affordable, equal and easy access to care and medicine regardless of income, age, gender, prior medical history, current medical status or area of residence.

James R. Rhodes presented the stark contrast that is the US Health Care system - our labyrinth of insurance apparatchiks, endless forms, denial and rationing of care, and the dominance of the pharmaceutical industry. Rhodes, an advocate for the Single Payer model, manages his physician-wife's geriatric practice.
