Activist Rudy Lozano Jr. enters Southwest Side race -First foe in 19 years for State Rep. Dan Burke

BY ABDON M. PALLASCH Political Reporter

An activist with one of Chicago's best-known Hispanic names, Rudy Lozano Jr. will test whether Southwest Side voters are ready to replace longtime incumbent State Rep. Dan Burke of the 23rd Legislative District.

It has been 26 years since Lozano's father, a community activist and union organizer, was killed in his home. Lozano's family has been politically active ever since.

It has been 19 years since Burke was elected. He likewise comes from a politically active family. His father, Joe, was an alderman, and his brother, Edward, still holds the seat. Dan Burke said "this is the first time in 19 years" he ever has had an opponent.

The district is now about two-thirds Hispanic, Burke said. Lozano said he thinks the
figure is closer to 85 percent. Burke thinks he is on good terms with his constituents and is one of only two non-Latino members of the state Legislature's Latino Caucus. Both men filed what they say was about 4,000 signatures to run Monday.

Lozano, 33, ran an after-school program at Little Village Westlawn High School, a school his father led protests to get built. Lozano was 7 when his father was killed, months after narrowly losing a race for alderman.
